Preservation and Legacy Awards Nomination

After a two-year hiatus due to COVID, the Historic Preservation Advisory Board (HPAB) is pleased to announce the 2022 Historic Preservation & Legacy Awards!  

We encourage you to nominate numerous buildings, structures, individuals, companies, and projects throughout Bozeman. Nominations are due Saturday, April 30. Award winners will be notified around May 11. 

Winners will be notified early May and be presented with their awards during the Bozeman Historic Preservation & Legacy Awards Ceremony on May 25, 2022, at 7 pm at the Emerson Weaver Room. Please RSVP via the key events on the right. 


Eligibility

  • Project must be located within Bozeman city limits
  • Project must be complete
  • Project must be historic, have significance, have intact historic physical integrity, and be at least 50 years old (except for Smart Growth Excellence award)

Criteria

Categories

  1. Restoration/Rehabilitation - Recognizes an exceptional effort in the preservation of structure meeting the following criteria:
    • Adheres to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Restoration or Rehabilitation 
    • Enhances the character of the property
    • Respects its context
    • Maximizes the retention of distinctive features that make the building or structure significant
    • Contributes to the building or structure's continued use
  2. Adaptive Reuse - Creative examples of adapting an existing building or site for a new use while maintaining its original character.
    • The project must have been completed after January 1, 2016
  3. Preservation Stewardship - Recognizes groups, individuals, agencies, or businesses that have a positive impact on historic preservation.
    • Examples include campaigns, education, fundraising, research, and construction
  4. Smart Growth Excellence - Recognizes new infill construction or a significant addition to a historic building.
    • The project must have been completed after January 1, 2016
    • Can be either residential or commercial
  5. Landscape - Recognizes enhancement to landscaping, streetscape, park, or open space meeting the following criteria:
    • Enhances the historic form, features, and details 
    • Promotes sustainability techniques while respecting the context of the area
  6. Signage - Recognizes restoration to a historic sign
    • The project must have been completed after January 1, 2016
  7. Cultural Heritage - Recognizes the overlooked history of minority groups in Bozeman that can include:
    • Oral history and storytelling 
    • Craftspeople and artists
    • Historic structures
