Phase 2 Update

It's been a little while since our last update, and we appreciate your patience. Behind the scenes, the project team has been hard at work with Phase 2 of the Local Landmark Project.

Over the past several months, our focus has been on drafting preliminary code language that will support the Local Landmark designation process and updating standards related to historic preservation. This drafting phase is actively underway and can now be informed by the recent adoption of the Unified Development Code (UDC).

There will be multiple internal and legal reviews during this phase which is intentional. Spending time on careful, early review helps us bring forward a proposal that is well thought out, legally sound, and clear, so that when we begin formal engagement with the Historic Preservation Advisory Board and the public, the conversation can focus on substance rather than correcting avoidable issues.

What's Next?

  • HPAB work session: Staff will present the initial iteration of the Local Landmark Program for review and discussion. We anticipate work sessions will begin late winter.
  • Public review and feedback: Associated draft documents will be available for public review with opportunities to engage.
  • Revisions: The project team will revise the draft based on feedback received.
  • HPAB review of draft code: The draft will be presented to HPAB for review and discussion.
  • Continue engagement and refinement of draft: The draft will be available for public review through final HPAB recommendation followed by review and action by the Community Development Board (as required by state law) and the City Commission.
  • Final review and decision: The City Commission is the final decision maker.

We look forward to sharing the draft soon and continuing this work collaboratively with the community.
