Phase 1 Recommendations Report is ready for review!

We are excited to share the final draft of the Phase 1 Report for the Bozeman Landmark Project is available for review! This report outlines a series of key recommendations to strengthen and modernize the historic preservation program, including:

  • Revise Section 38.340 of the Bozeman Municipal Code;
  • Fine-tune the review criteria and standards for the Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) process;
  • Update the boundaries of the Neighborhood Conservation Overlay District where conflicts exist;
  • Create a local landmark nomination process, criteria, and application form;
  • Update Historic Preservation Advisory Board (HPAB) responsibilities in BMC Section 2.05.860 and 2.05.930;
  • Make amendments to the existing Bozeman Guidelines for Historic Preservation & the Neighborhood Conservation Overlay District.

In addition to these items, the report highlights broader recommendations outside the immediate scope of this project. These future considerations may require additional funding or other actions to occur first, but are listed to help continue momentum for historic preservation in future city efforts. What's Next?

These recommendations will guide us into Phase 2 of the project: putting the proposed changes into action.

  • Attend upcoming public meetingsto learn more and provide verbal feedback:
    • Historic Preservation Advisory Board (HPAB) meeting: Wednesday, April 16, 6-8pm
    • Community Development Board meeting: Monday, April 21, 6-8pm

Both HPAB and the Community Development Board will review the report and share their feedback with the City Commission, which will meet on Tuesday, May 13 from 6–8 PM to consider adoption of this report to move forward into Phase 2
