Historic Preservation Month 2024

We are off to a great start with Historic Preservation Month. Thanks to everyone who came to the Cookie Painting Party. Over 100 cookies were painted and consumed! Our next event is an author discussion with Betsy Gaines Quammen at the Story Mansion on Tuesday, May 14 from 6-8pm. Gaines Quammen's newest book True West: Myth and Mending on the Far Side of America explores myths of the West and how, if left unexamined, they distort the realities of the present and exacerbate polarizations. These misperceptions about land, politics, liberty, and self-determination threaten the wellbeing of western communities overrun by newcomers seeking a dream—and the country, unless America recognizes the dangers of building a national identity on illusion. Gaines Quammen interrogates it all by listening, carefully, to people from varying political and cultural perspectives as she seeks to reconcile the deep anger and broad misunderstandings that linger amid myths that define and impede the West and America (https://www.betsygainesquammen.com/true-west). Happy Historic Preservation Month! We have a bunch of fun things planned for you to celebrate Bozeman's culture and history. See the key dates on the right for details on the events.

We are excited to offer a citywide scavenger hunt during the month of May. Participants who submit their completed scavenger hunt form will earn Downtown Bozeman Dollars (while supplies last) that can be spent at participating downtown businesses. Below are a few examples of the locations to find. Download the form here or pick it up at locations around town like the Bozeman Library, Gallatin History Museum, City Hall, Story Mill Community Park, or Extreme History. We will also have print outs at other Preservation Month events. Forms must be submitted by June 3. Good luck!

Our first Historic Preservation Month event takes place on Sunday, May 5 from 12-3PM at the Story Mansion. We will have cookies to paint, yes paint, but don't worry, it's edible! We encourage people of all ages to come participate. We will also have other kid friendly activities and mansion tours. Join us as we kick off Historic Preservation Month.

Thanks to everyone who submitted your nominations for the Historic Preservation Awards. The Historic Preservation Advisory Board will be reviewing them and choosing winners at their scheduled meeting on April 17. We will recognize winners at the Historic Preservation Awards on May 30 at the Bozeman Event Space at 14 S. Tracy. We hope to see you there! For more details, see "key dates" on the right.

The Historic Preservation Advisory Board (HPAB) is pleased to announce the 2024 Historic Preservation Awards and invites the community to submit nominations!

We encourage you to submit numerous nominations. These awards recognize notable examples of projects, properties, individuals, organizations, and stewardship to historic preservation and Bozeman's history and cultural heritage. Nominations are due Sunday, April 7. Each nomination will be reviewed by the Historic Preservation Advisory Board and award winners will be notified at the end of April. We will gather on Thursday, May 30, 2024 to celebrate Historic Preservation Month and the award winners at HPAB's annual preservation awards ceremony at the Bozeman Event Space located at 14 S. Tracy at 6:30pm. Please join us for drinks and light hors d'oeuvres followed by the awards presentation. We would appreciate if you RSVP via the key events on the right.

Eligible nominees are many and varied. Some examples include:

• Committed historic preservation advocates and educators
• Homeowners who have devoted time, energy, blood, sweat and tears to restoring an older house
• Beautifully preserved or restored residential, commercial, institutional, industrial, or religious buildings
• Transformative adaptive reuse projects where an old building has been given another life with a new use
• Historic and cultural landscapes including gardens, parks, and farms
• Legacy and small businesses that have been an anchor to the community and are located in an historic property
• Tradespeople practicing historic architectural craft or skill
• Yourself! Self-nominations are encouraged and appreciated. You should be proud of what you have accomplished!

Eligibility Requirements

• Project/property must be located within Bozeman city limits
• Project must be complete by the date the application is submitted
• Have an original construction date prior to 1974 (infill projects should have been completed within the last 5 years)
• Person/Organization can be from greater Gallatin area but needs to have ties to Bozeman

The Preservation Awards will honor achievement in any combination of the following areas:

• Commercial Project - A commercial project that embodies excellence through maintenance, stabilization, repair, planning, restoration, rehabilitation, stewardship, or adaptive reuse of our built environment. Must have been completed in the last 5 years. This can also include an institutional, industrial, or religious building.
• Residential Project - A residential project that embodies excellence through maintenance, stabilization, repair, planning, restoration, rehabilitation, stewardship, or adaptive reuse of our built environment. Must have been completed in the last 5 years.
• New Infill Construction - A project that was recently constructed that fits into the character of the surrounding historic neighborhood and is sensitive to the existing built environment. Must have been completed in the last 5 years and can be commercial or residential.
• Preservation Stewardship & Leadership - Recognizes an individual, group, agency, nonprofit, or business that has a positive impact on historic preservation and/or on Bozeman's cultural heritage. This can also be a project or activity designed to empower and educate the community at large and can include campaigns, fundraising, research, and construction.
• Landscaping - Recognizes enhancement to landscaping, streetscape, park, or open space that enhances the historic form, features, and details of a property/site. This can also include projects that promote sustainability and water conservation techniques while respecting the context of the area. The recipient may be either an individual or an organization.
• Preservation Craft - Recognizes a construction-related activity applicable to the process of preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, or reconstruction of a historic component of a structure. This can include projects such as restoring a historic sign, window, or other architectural components. It can also include an individual who works in the traditional trade and has a knowledge of historic preservation.
• Cultural Heritage - Acknowledges those overlooked in Bozeman's historical narrative and celebrates the culture and heritage of traditionally underrecognized individuals and communities. Underrecognized individuals and communities comprise, among others, Black or African American, Asian and Asian American, Hispanic or Latino, Native American and Indigenous, those of mixed heritage and races, LGBTQIA+, and those with disabilities, though this list is not exhaustive. This award aims to honor individuals, organizations, or sites that have contributed to the preservation and promotion of the diverse cultural heritage of the Greater Gallatin "Valley of Flowers" area. It can be both tangible cultural heritage such as buildings, monuments, landscapes, books, food, arts and intangible cultural heritage such as storytelling, oral histories, language, traditions, and knowledge.
